The LIFE WOLFALPS EU project in France will encompass the whole French section of the Alps. This region is located in the southeast of the country, borders both Italy and Switzerland, and covers a surface area of just over 4 151 000 ha. The area spans two administrative regions in the country: Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes (AURA) to the north and Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur (PACA) to the south.
At a more local level, the project area is made up of eight administrative “departments”: Drôme, Isère, Haute-Savoie and Savoie in AURA; Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, Alpes-Maritimes, Hautes-Alpes and Vaucluse in PACA. The project area includes large mountain massifs such as the Mercantour to the east and the Écrins to the north, as well as less extensive massifs such as the Dévoluy, the Queyras and the Cerces. The area is characterised by a gradient from continental, mountainous climate to the north to a Mediterranean climate to the south.
